In the world of addiction, most of the attention is usually spent focused on substance abuse, and rightly so. Addiction is classified as a compulsive behavior that reaches far behind the consumption substances. For instance, binge-eating disorder is a fairly prevalent eating disorder that affects many, but is regularly under diagnosed due to the lack of awareness in the medical community.
Recent estimates show that 1.6% of females and 0.8% of males have suffered with a binge eating disorder over the past year. Even more recently a screener has been developed to help identify those that might be suffering, called the Binge Eating Disorder Screener-7 (BEDS-7). The screener was developed by and team led by Barry K. Herman, MD, of Shire Development.
The screener is composed of seven questions, which interviews the potential sufferer to determined the severity of their disorder, in hopes to more accurately treat the condition.
Another development in eating disorder research is the affiliation between ADHD and some eating disorders. More specifically, there is a link between children with ADHD and a disorder called “Loss of control eating disorder” (LOC-ES). “Loss of Control Eating Disorder is much like binge eating, as it is usually manifested by a child not being able to stop eating a certain times.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that, as of 2011, approximately 11% of children in the US aged 4-17 (6.4 million) have been diagnosed with ADHD. The common behavioral disorder is characterized by hyperactivity, impulsive behavior and difficulty sustaining attention.
As far as the connection between having ADHD and LOC-ES, there isn’t anything really jumping out as the cause. The one conclusion that doctors have been able to pose, is that a lot of those suffering with more severe cases of ADHD have more of a genetic predisposition to impulsive behavior.
