Types of Eating Disorders
An eating disorder often begins to emerge when there are obsessive dieting behaviors combined with strong feelings of low self-esteem and poor body image. It is an illness that affects all aspects of a person’s life.Common eating disorder types include anorexia (characterized by restricting one’s food intake to below minimum daily caloric requirements on a regular basis, resulting in extreme weight loss), bulimia (consuming a large amount of food in a short period of time, followed by excessive exercising or vomiting), and binge-eating (consuming large amounts of food in a short period of time followed by feelings of guilt, shame and loss of control).

Patient-Centered Approach to Eating Disorder Recovery
New Dawn’s eating disorder recovery programs – Aspire Wellness Center, Marin Vista Health and Wellness, and Villa Ladera – have been operating patient-centered treatment, recovery and wellness programs in residential, intensive outpatient and partial hospitalization settings throughout Northern California for over a decade. In our nearly 30 years of experience owning and operating behavioral health programs, we have found that the most effective treatment approach takes into account each individual’s unique circumstances, challenges and treatment goals.
All of our eating disorders programs are flexible and tailored to meet each person’s unique needs. We also understand that anorexia recovery, bulimia recovery and binge eating disorder recovery requires more than just a good program. Successful recovery for eating disorders requires intensive individual therapy by licensed therapists and registered dietitians specializing in eating disorder recovery. Our treatment outcomes are unrivaled other programs because our eating disorder centers offer more individual therapy sessions per week on average compared to other programs.

Individualized Eating Disorder Recovery
At Aspire Wellness Center and Marin Vista Health and Wellness, we understand that eating disorders are often caused by a combination of psychological, biological, interpersonal, and social factors that vary widely from person to person. Eating disorder recovery is not only about teaching participants how to think differently about food, and how to prepare and eat their meals in a positive and healthy way.
Effective eating disorder recovery is also about working with each patient individually in private therapy sessions on a regular basis. We strive to help them improve their self-esteem, their self-concept, their emotional regulation, and their relationships. When co-occurring conditions such as anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use or other related mental health issues are present, we also help our participants work through these struggles while they are in the program.
Real Life Nutrition Approach
We approach nutrition from the basic premise that all foods are good in moderation. Individuals seeking anorexia recovery, bulimia recovery, or binge eating disorder treatment have often developed complex relationships with food which involve restricting, bingeing, purging and many other compensatory behaviors. Participants work closely with our registered dietitians and Nutritionists to create a personalized eating plan designed to meet their unique nutritional needs.
Our eating recovery programs are distinctive from other programs because we don’t decide what our participants are going to eat and then prepare it for them. Instead, we empower our patients and build up their confidence by giving them the freedom to make their own food choices. Our patients also learn how to shop and prepare their own healthy meals, as well as how to portion their foods with the guidance of our dietitians and nutritionists. We never tell our patients what they must eat. Rather, we respect their preferences and teach them how to make good decisions so that they can continue to practice what they have learned long after they have graduated from our eating disorder program.
