Anorexia Nervosa

What is Anorexia Nervosa?

Anorexia Nervosa is one type of eating disorder where individuals feel the need to reduce their body weight, and will literally starve themselves in many cases. They are often obsessed with their weight and have a very distorted idea about what their body looks like, and what is should look like. Unfortunately, those with anorexia will derive their self-worth and self-image based on how their body looks, and so they feel it is necessary to restrict their calorie intake on a regular basis to achieve a “thinner” body. They do this by skipping meals frequently, avoiding foods that are rich in calories, exercising compulsively, and by taking diuretics or other drugs designed to reduce their normal appetite for food.

Anorexia has the highest mortality rate of any mental health diagnosis, and can affect both teenagers and adults. Most eating disorders are progressive diseases, but it is never to late to start anorexia recovery and live a normal, healthy life.

Anorexia Nervosa Warning Signs:

  • Wearing baggy pants and sweatshirts to conceal weight loss
  • Refusing to eat meals on a regular basis
  • Counting calories and avoiding certain foods
  • Exercising compulsively
  • Depression
  • Showing signs of being physically underweight
