Binge Eating Disorder

What is Binge Eating Disorder?

Binge eating disorder is the most common type of eating disorder and is characterized by eating excessively, sometimes after periods of fasting. Unlike with Bulimia, purging behaviors such as vomiting or taking diuretics does not typically follow most binge-eating episodes.

Like others suffering from an eating disorder, binge eaters have difficulty stopping this destructive behavior on their own because they are using it as a coping mechanism for overcoming stress, depression, and/or other negative emotions. Co-occurring disorders may also be contributing to their binge-eating behavior. Obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, heart disease, fatigue, and low self-esteem are common consequences of long term binge-eating.

Binge Eating Warning Signs (not all are required):

  • eating large quantities of food late at night
  • wearing baggy clothes to conceal weight
  • eating frequently
  • eating less often but with much larger portions
  • often appearing overweight
  • depression
  • eating in private
