Residential or Day Treatment? Sacramento Rehab Explains Advantages of Each

New Dawn Treatment Centers drug and alcohol residential rehab

There are many ways to pursue treatment at a Sacramento rehab for drug or alcohol addiction. One important decision to make is whether you will seek residential or day treatment. Each has distinct advantages you’ll want to consider.

How Do Residential and Day Treatment for Addiction Differ?

Residential treatment, also referred to as inpatient treatment, typically involves a 30-day, 60-day, or 90 day stay in a treatment center. Ideally, the center has a home-like setting that provides the benefit of helping the participant feel relaxed and at ease. The treatment may involve individual therapy, group counseling, family therapy, and other approaches. Generally residential treatment for addiction is followed by aftercare support.

Day treatment typically consists of approximately six hour per day in onsite individual and/or group therapy up to five days per week. Its flexibility is one of its main advantages. Also called outpatient treatment, it is often used for people who are, or have been, on the road to recovery but need additional guidance to support or restart the recovery process. A day treatment program tends to include drug testing to ensure that the participant is meeting sobriety requirements. Some programs discharge people who relapse during outpatient treatment, but we find it to be more effective to allow them to stay in the program and help them get back on track.

What’s Right for Me?

The best way to know which type of program is right for you is to connect with a representative. They will talk with you about some of the many factors that can influence your choice, including:

  • The severity of your addiction
  • The need for monitored withdrawal to begin the process
  • Your work or school and family obligations
  • Your budget
  • Your commitment to healing

While it’s important to select the type of treatment that offers the kind of support you need to achieve and maintain sobriety, what’s more important is that you are taking action. So, while you want to carefully weigh your options, you don’t want to suffer from “paralysis by analysis,” where ultimately you choose not to choose and don’t move forward with either.
