The difficult transition that many veterans face when they return home from their service can be overwhelming. Unfortunately, this can lead to emotional and mental health issues, which can increase the likelihood of veterans turning to drugs and alcohol. It is a difficult and isolating experience that can make it hard to cope, leading more Veterans to approach addiction as a solution. In this blog, we’ll discuss the potential reasons why veterans turn to drugs and alcohol to cope with PTSD.

It’s no secret that many veterans struggle with addiction. In fact, it’s estimated that over 20% of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans suffer from some form of substance abuse. Veterans often turn to drugs or alcohol as a way to self-medicate in order to cope with the symptoms of PTSD. While there are many treatment options available for addiction, many veterans are hesitant to seek help or go to rehab.

Some PTSD symptoms are as follows:

  • flashbacks
  • memory issues
  • low self-esteem
  • relationship difficulties
  • aggression
  • self-destructive behaviors

Why Are Veterans Sometimes Reluctant to Seek Help?

There are a number of reasons why veterans may be reluctant to seek treatment for their addiction. The first is the stigma that surrounds addiction and mental health issues. Veterans may feel like they are weak or broken if they admit that they are struggling. Second, veterans may not be aware of the resources available to them. They may not know where to turn for help or what kind of help is available.

If you are a veteran struggling with addiction, know that you are not alone. We are very proud that New Dawn Treatment Centers offers one of the only programs exclusively developed for Veterans and Active Duty service members, where they will reside together and experience treatment together as a single unit throughout their stay.
