6 Questions to Ask Yourself if You Want to Change

Generally speaking, change isn’t easy. Successfully changing anything in your life tends to require sustained focus, effort, and commitment. So before you undertake any kind of serious life modification, like getting treatment for addiction in a Sacramento detox program, it’s important to know what’s driving this desire to change and how important it is to you.

Taking a Hard Look at Your Motivations

If you’ve made a commitment to changing your life for the better, that’s a great decision. But to give yourself the best chance at success, ask yourself these questions before you dive in:

  1. Why do you want to make this change? Ignoring the rest of the world for the moment, what are your reasons for making the change?
  2. Why would others want you to make this change? Who we are has an impact on those around us. Presumably, changing your life for the better will have positive benefits for others. What are those benefits?
  3. How important is this change to you? Rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being extremely important). Obviously there’s more at stake with some goals than others.
  4. How important is this change to your friends and family? Here again, rate it on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being extremely important).
  5. How will you feel if you aren’t able to meet your objective? Of course you hope and assume that with enough effort, you can alter your life the way you hope to. But what will it feel like if something about you or something about your circumstances prevents you from achieving your goal?
  6. What will you do if you don’t hit the mark on your first attempt? What’s your Plan B?

These questions and your answers are especially important when it comes to something as challenging as getting clean and sober. Too often we have the general sense that we should do some things differently, but we don’t take the time to really consider the specific reasons for expending the effort. Giving some thought to your motivations and your plan for rallying if you don’t achieve success on your first try can be very helpful.
