Outpatient care is one of the most common forms of addiction care in California, reflecting both the accessibility of the model and the reality that most people seeking help cannot simply step away from their lives to pursue residential care. It allows people to receive structured, clinically supervised addiction treatment while continuing to live at home and maintain their daily responsibilities.
The need for accessible treatment has never been more pressing. More than 2.7 million Californians currently need addiction treatment, but only 1 in 10 receive care – a gap driven in large part by the logistical barriers that residential programs can’t always accommodate. At New Dawn Treatment Centers, outpatient programming is designed to close that gap.
With locations across Northern California and Nevada, evidence-based clinical care, and scheduling built around real life, New Dawn’s outpatient programs make effective addiction treatment accessible without requiring a person to put everything on hold.
What We Treat
Alcohol and Substance Use Disorders
At New Dawn, outpatient treatment addresses substance use disorders alongside any mental health conditions, trauma history, and underlying patterns that fuel them. Primary substances treated include alcohol, opioids like fentanyl and heroin, benzodiazepines, and stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine. Co-occurring conditions like anxiety, depression, PTSD, and bipolar disorder are treated as part of an integrated clinical plan, not as a separate concern.

How We Treat
Outpatient Care Built Around Your Life
Outpatient treatment at New Dawn is built on the same clinical foundation as residential care. It is just the structure that is different, not the depth.
Every client works with a dedicated master’s-level therapist and drug and alcohol counselor. Treatment is trauma-informed, gender-responsive, and built around an individualized plan that evolves as recovery does. Clients will attend scheduled sessions – whether morning, afternoon, or evening – and return home each day.
Work, family, and daily responsibilities stay intact, but the clinical work stays rigorous.
New Dawn offers both intensive outpatient (IOP) and Day Treatment (PHP) at multiple locations across Northern California and Nevada.
What Is Outpatient Addiction Treatment, and Is It Right for You?
Outpatient addiction treatment is a structured program in which clients attend therapy, group sessions, and clinical support on a scheduled basis without living at the treatment facility.
It is not a lighter version of residential care – it is a distinct and clinically appropriate level of care designed for people whose situation, support system, and addiction severity align with the outpatient model.
Outpatient treatment tends to be a strong fit when several conditions are in place:
- A stable, substance-free home environment
- A reliable support system of family or peers in recovery
- A substance use disorder that does not require 24-hour medical supervision
- The motivation and structure to attend scheduled sessions consistently
- Work, school, or family obligations that make residential care impractical
The right level of care is always determined through a clinical assessment, not by assumption. New Dawn’s admissions team conducts free, confidential assessments to match every prospective client with the program that fits their clinical needs and life circumstances.

The Different Levels of Outpatient Rehab, and How to Know Which Fits
| Level of Care | Hours Per Week | Best Suited For |
|---|---|---|
| Day Treatment (PHP) | Up to 30 hours (6 hrs/day, 5 days/week) | Step-down from residential; clients needing high structure without 24-hr care |
| Intensive Outpatient (IOP) | 9–15 hours per week | Moderate substance use; clients graduating from PHP; stable home environment |
Both levels include individual therapy, group sessions, family counseling, and relapse prevention work. The primary differences are the intensity and the structure. PHP functions much like a full-day program – clients attend for most of the day and return home in the evenings. IOP, though, is more flexible; with sessions offered in morning, afternoon, and evening blocks to accommodate work and family schedules.
New Dawn’s outpatient locations are conveniently situated near major highways in the Sacramento region and Reno, Nevada, with morning, afternoon, and evening scheduling available to fit virtually any routine.
How Long Does Outpatient Rehab Take? A Timeline
The length of outpatient treatment is determined by where someone starts, how they progress, and what the clinical team recommends along the way.
The research consistently shows that longer engagement yields better outcomes. The step-down structure below reflects how most clients move through New Dawn’s outpatient continuum, from assessment through lifetime aftercare.
- Free Confidential Assessment – Completed within 24 to 48 hours of the first call. Determines the appropriate level-of-care entry point and builds the initial treatment recommendation.
- Day Treatment / PHP (if applicable) – Generally several weeks in duration. Clients attend up to 6 hours of structured programming per day, 5 days per week. Typically, the entry point for clients stepping down from residential care or those needing higher outpatient intensity.
- Intensive Outpatient (IOP) – Typically 6 to 8 weeks. Clients attend multiple sessions per week, combining individual therapy, group work, family counseling, and skills-based programming.
- Step-Down to Continuing Care – Frequency reduces as stability increases. Clients transition to a less intensive outpatient structure while continuing to build independence in real-world settings.
- Lifetime Aftercare and Alumni Support – Begins at graduation and has no end date. New Dawn’s lifetime aftercare program and alumni network provide ongoing connection, accountability, and peer support for as long as they’re needed.
No two timelines look exactly alike. A client entering at the IOP level will follow a different path than one stepping down from a 90-day residential program. The clinical team adjusts the plan as recovery develops.
The Behavioral Therapies Behind Outpatient Treatment at New Dawn
The clinical foundation of New Dawn’s outpatient program is evidence-based and multi-modal. Since no single therapy works for everyone, each client’s treatment plan draws from a range of proven approaches, coordinated by their own dedicated therapist.
Therapies used across outpatient programming include:
These approaches are not applied in isolation. The on-site therapist coordinates the clinical plan across individual sessions, group therapy, and family work so that every element of treatment is working toward the same goal.
Is Outpatient Treatment the Right Fit? The Honest Pros and Cons
Outpatient is highly effective for the right person at the right time, and the wrong fit for someone whose situation calls for more structure or medical support. The table below breaks down the key factors side by side, so clients and families can walk into the admissions conversation already thinking clearly about what they need.
| Topic | When Outpatient Works | When to Consider Higher Care |
|---|---|---|
| Home Environment | Stable, substance-free, and supportive | Triggering, unsafe, or substance-accessible |
| Prior Treatment History | First treatment attempt or successful step-down from residential | Previous outpatient attempts have not held |
| Medical Need | No active withdrawal; medically stable | Active withdrawal symptoms require supervised detox first |
| Mental Health | Co-occurring conditions are stable or mild | Severe co-occurring conditions need stabilization first |
| Daily Functioning | Able to attend sessions consistently and maintain basic routines | Attendance isn't realistic; daily functioning is significantly impaired |
| Structure Needed | Self-motivated with a support system in place | Needs the support and 24-hour structure of residential care |
If the right column feels more familiar than the left, that’s not a reason to give up on treatment. It’s a reason to start at the right level.
New Dawn offers a full continuum of care from medically supervised detox through residential, PHP, IOP, and lifetime aftercare. Wherever someone needs to start, there is a clear and connected path forward.
Does Your Insurance Cover Outpatient Rehab?

- For clients with in-network insurance, New Dawn handles all billing directly and will never charge more than the applicable copay or deductible for covered services. The admissions team verifies benefits before treatment begins, so there are no surprises. Many plans cover outpatient treatment at 100% after deductible.

FAQs
How Can I Pay for Treatment?
Many alcohol and drug rehab centers will advertise that “insurance is accepted”, but if you look at the fine print on their website, they will usually disclose that YOU are responsible for billing your insurance company. This means that they are actually NOT a preferred provider with your health plan, and that you will have to pay the FULL cost of treatment at admission. That is a big risk to take with tens of thousands of dollars, and a heavy burden to carry while in early recovery.
At New Dawn, there is no fine print when we say that insurance is accepted. We will verify your benefits for you, and tell you during the pre-admission process exactly what your out-of-pocket expenses will be. We will never charge you more than your copay or deductible for covered services, and we are experts at getting as much treatment authorized as your insurance will allow. Billing your insurance is also something we do on your behalf, so that you can focus on what matters most – your recovery.
Many insurance plans cover up to 100% of our costs. Call us for a confidential insurance verification, and get started on your road to recovery today.
We have a number of affordable treatment options available that are designed to make recovery accessible without causing financial strain. In fact, we have a Treatment Pricing Guarantee that promises to match the cost of any comparable treatment center. We also offer special discounts to Veterans, First Responders, former Union workers and their family members, as well as to our Alumni.
Additionally, If you are interested in financing your out-of-pocket expenses, we have partnered with My Treatment Lender to help you access funds for treatment. They offer flexible financing options, low monthly payments and competitive interest rates for part or all of your drug and alcohol treatment costs. Call us today, we can help you get the life back that you deserve.
