In California, more than 5.6 million people 12 and older dealt with a substance use disorder in 2024 – yet the majority never received treatment. This gap between needing help and getting it, though, is rarely about want. It’s about not knowing where to start or what to expect.
At New Dawn Treatment Centers, the admissions process is designed to remove every barrier between that first moment of readiness and the first day of real care. There is no runaround and no fine print. Just a straightforward path from the first call to a personalized treatment plan, with a team standing by 24 hours a day to walk alongside every step of the way.
What We Treat
Addiction, Co-Occurring Disorders, and More
New Dawn provides treatment for adult men and women who are dealing with substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. Primary diagnoses include alcohol use disorder, opioid and fentanyl dependence, stimulant use, and benzodiazepine dependence. Co-occurring conditions – including anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, and PTSD – are treated as part of an integrated clinical plan, not as a separate afterthought.

How We Treat: Holistic Healing and Lifelong Support
At New Dawn, treatment is built around the whole person, not just the substance. Every program combines clinical depth, gender-specific structure, and holistic care in a home-like environment designed to feel safe. Our approach is personal, coordinated, and built to last well beyond discharge.
No two treatment plans look alike, because no two people arrive at exactly the same place. From the first assessment through the last day of aftercare, the goal is always the same – lasting recovery, built around the individual.
What Happens on Your First Call
Reaching out for the first time is often the hardest part.
At New Dawn, the first call is handled by an admissions specialist available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week – no obligation, no cost, and no judgment. The conversation moves at the caller’s pace.
During that call, the admissions team will listen, answer questions, begin the insurance verification process, and work toward scheduling a free confidential pre-admission assessment.
In most cases, admission can be scheduled within 24 to 48 hours of that first conversation.
Admissions Criteria at New Dawn
Getting into treatment shouldn’t feel like navigating a maze. New Dawn keeps the criteria straightforward because the focus belongs on recovery – not on paperwork. The admissions team is available around the clock to answer questions, talk through any concerns, and make sure the path forward is clear from the very first conversation.
We have two basic criteria that need to be met:
- Adults 18 and older
- A substance use issue – be it alcohol, opioids, stimulants, or benzodiazepines
In most cases, no prior medical clearance is needed before reaching out. New Dawn’s clinical team will handle your medical evaluation as part of the intake process. So the first step is simply making the call. If New Dawn isn’t the right fit for any reason, the admissions team will help identify the appropriate level of care or point toward the right resources – because the goal is for every person who reaches out to find the help they need, wherever that may be.
Your Free and Confidential Pre-Admission Assessments
Taking that first step toward treatment is easier when there’s no guesswork about what it involves.
The pre-admission assessment is free, completely confidential, and carries no obligation. It’s simply a conversation designed to make sure the right care is matched to the right person.
This conversation will cover:
- Substance use history and pattern
- Current physical and mental health
- Medications and medical history
- Personal circumstances, support systems, and goals
All information shared is protected under HIPAA and other state and federal confidentiality laws. Nothing is disclosed to anyone (including family members) without the client’s express written consent. There is no obligation to enroll following the assessment.
Personalized Treatment Recommendation – Plans Built Around You
No two people arrive at the same place, and no two treatment plans look alike. Following the assessment, the admissions team will make a clinical recommendation that accounts for the full picture – not just the primary diagnosis.
The recommendation covers each of the following:
| What Gets Determined | What It Means in Practice |
|---|---|
| Level of care | Detox, residential, PHP, IOP, or a step-down combination based on clinical need |
| Program and location | The specific New Dawn facility and program that best fits the individual |
| Co-occurring care | Whether mental health conditions need to be addressed alongside substance use treatment |
| Aftercare planning | Discharge planning begins at intake – not at the end of the program |
Every recommendation is built around the individual – their history, their circumstances, and what they actually need to heal. And, from the first assessment through the last day of aftercare, the plan evolves with the person.
Insurance Verification
New Dawn verifies insurance benefits before admission, so clients know exactly where they stand financially before committing to anything. Many major insurance plans cover a significant portion – or sometimes even all – of the cost of treatment at New Dawn. The admissions team handles the verification process directly and communicates results clearly. There is no fine print and no surprise billing.
New Dawn is in-network with many major providers.
Not sure if your insurance is accepted? Call us at (916) 741-5312, and our team will verify your benefits at no cost.
Understanding Your Out-of-Pocket Costs After Insurance
For clients with coverage, New Dawn will never charge more than the applicable copay or deductible for covered services. For those paying out of pocket, New Dawn’s Treatment Pricing Guarantee promises to match the cost of any comparable treatment center. Additional financial options include special discounts for Veterans, First Responders, former Union workers, and alumni, as well as financing through New Dawn’s partnership with My Treatment Lender, which offers flexible payment plans and competitive rates.
A Practical Guide
How to Prepare for Treatment
Once a treatment date is confirmed, preparation is straightforward. The admissions team will walk through everything needed before arrival. The goal is to make the transition into treatment as smooth and stress-free as possible for both the client and their family.

Getting Here: Travel and Transportation
New Dawn has multiple locations across Northern California and Nevada – including Reno, Sacramento, Lathrop, Loomis, Fair Oaks, Granite Bay, Orangevale, Citrus Heights, Elk Grove, and Auburn.
For clients committing to a 30-day or longer stay, complimentary travel assistance is available to ensure a safe and comfortable arrival. The admissions team handles logistics directly.
What to Pack for Your Stay
New Dawn’s residential homes are fully equipped and comfortable, so there is no need to arrive with more than the basics.
Recommended items include:
- Government-issued photo ID and insurance card
- A 30-day supply of any current prescription medications in original, labeled bottles
- Comfortable, casual clothing appropriate for daily activities and group sessions
- Workout clothes and athletic shoes
- Sleepwear and undergarments
- Alcohol-free toiletries – shampoo, conditioner, body wash, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste
- A small amount of cash for personal incidentals
- A journal, books, or other personal comfort items
- Any medically necessary devices, such as a CPAP machine or glucometer
Chef-prepared meals are provided daily and can accommodate dietary restrictions, including low-carb, diabetic, and other nutritional needs. Bedding, linens, and basic household amenities are provided at all residential locations.
Regarding Cell Phones and Laptops
Cell phones are permitted at New Dawn 24/7 and may be kept with you at all times. Tablets, iPads, handheld gaming devices, and laptops are also allowed, but are only accessible during designated Personal Device Hours – from 7:00–9:00 AM and 8:00–10:00 PM – and must be returned to staff for secure storage outside of those times.
A few things to keep in mind before you arrive:
- All devices must be kept on silent mode – vibration is not permitted
- Device use is limited to private or designated areas such as your bedroom or approved outdoor spaces
- Video calls must be taken privately to protect the confidentiality of other clients
- Photos or videos of other clients or staff are not allowed without explicit consent
- Devices may not be used during group sessions, individual sessions, or any time clinical or medical staff require your engagement
- Devices may not be shared with other clients
Smartwatches or wearables that connect to a phone and receive calls, texts, or notifications are not permitted. Large gaming consoles such as PlayStation, Xbox, or Nintendo Switch docks are also not allowed.
New Dawn is not responsible for loss, theft, or any damage to personal devices, and if device use becomes disruptive or interferes with treatment, staff may temporarily restrict access, and the treatment team will review the situation from there.
What to Leave at Home
To protect the safety and therapeutic environment of all clients, certain items are not permitted at New Dawn residential facilities.
The following should be left at home:
- Alcohol or any substances, including those in toiletry products
- Drug paraphernalia of any kind
- Weapons or sharp objects
- Valuable jewelry or expensive electronics
- Offensive or triggering clothing
- Outside food and beverages
Your First Day
What Arrival Looks Like at New Dawn
Arriving at a treatment facility for the first time can bring up a lot of emotions – but at New Dawn, the intake process is designed to feel as calm and welcoming as possible.
Upon arrival, clients are greeted by our staff, complete any remaining paperwork, and meet with a team member for initial orientations. Vitals will be taken, medications reviewed, and a clear picture of the program’s first days is laid out. From that point forward, the on-site therapist and counselor become primary points of contact – consistent, familiar faces from day one through discharge.

The variety of classes they expose you to makes it a lot easier to understand that there is no one right way to get better, and that you have to find what works for you.
Thank you to staff for everything. Big big 5 stars

Family Communication in Treatment
Family involvement can play a meaningful role in recovery, and New Dawn supports the connection between clients and their loved ones throughout the treatment process. Family therapy sessions are available, allowing family members to participate actively regardless of location.
It is important for families to understand that all communication involving a client’s treatment, including whether family members can receive updates or be included in calls, is determined entirely by the client. Under confidentiality laws, like HIPAA, New Dawn cannot share any information about a client’s participation or progress without that client’s express written consent. This protects the client’s privacy and autonomy throughout their stay.
Specific communication schedules, visitation policies, and phone access during treatment vary by location and program level. The admissions team can walk families through what to expect at the specific facility their loved one will be attending.
The New Dawn Program Length and What to Tell the People in Your Life
New Dawn offers 30-day, 60-day, and 90-day residential programs, as well as PHP, IOP, and outpatient options for clients who do not require or have completed residential care. The right program length is determined through the pre-admission assessment and clinical recommendation process.
For clients navigating how to communicate a leave of absence to employers, family, or others, the following framing may be helpful:
| Situation | Suggested Approach |
|---|---|
| Employer / HR | Request FMLA or medical leave if applicable; treatment is a protected medical matter |
| Close family members | Share as much or as little as feels safe; the clinical team can help prepare for these conversations |
| Colleagues | A general medical leave is sufficient; no details are required |
| Legal or financial obligations | Notify the admissions team early so accommodations can be arranged if needed |
The admissions team and clinical staff are experienced in helping clients think through these logistics.
Why Choose Us
Why Choose New Dawn for Your Recovery Journey
Choosing where to get treatment is one of the most important decisions a person will make. The options across Northern California and Nevada vary widely in their approaches, environments, and outcomes.
Here is what makes New Dawn different:
- Gender-specific residential housing – Separate programming and living environments for men and women, designed around the clinical reality that gender shapes how stress, trauma, and addiction develop and heal.
- Private rooms – Available at luxury residential locations, providing the rest, privacy, and personal space that recovery demands.
- Holistic and experiential therapies – Alpaca and equine groups, massage, yoga, acupuncture, art therapy, recreation therapy, and more; all clinically coordinated, not tacked on.
- Dedicated on-site clinical team – Master’s-level therapists and certified drug and alcohol counselors carry individual caseloads from day one. No rotating staff, no strangers.
- Trauma-informed care – EMDR, brainspotting, ART, CBT, DBT, and Dr. Stephanie Covington’s gender-responsive curriculum are embedded throughout all programs.
- Industry-leading client-to-clinician ratio – 3:1 at luxury programs, 4:1 at other programs: the lowest in the Sacramento area.
- One-Year Sober Guarantee – Clients who complete a 90-day residential program and experience a relapse within one year may return for treatment at no cost.
- 95% client satisfaction rate – Measured through independent, ongoing feedback collection as part of New Dawn’s CARF accreditation.
- The largest alumni network in Northern California – Peer-led meetings, mentorship, an alumni app, and community events that continue for life.
- Lifetime aftercare – Recovery support does not end at discharge. New Dawn’s aftercare program is the only one of its kind offering free weekly support for life.
The list above reflects more than three decades of deliberate decisions about what good treatment actually requires. Each item exists because it produces better outcomes, and if even one of these resonates, it’s worth a conversation.
FAQs
How Can I Pay for Treatment?
Many alcohol and drug rehab centers will advertise that “insurance is accepted”, but if you look at the fine print on their website, they will usually disclose that YOU are responsible for billing your insurance company. This means that they are actually NOT a preferred provider with your health plan, and that you will have to pay the FULL cost of treatment at admission. That is a big risk to take with tens of thousands of dollars, and a heavy burden to carry while in early recovery.
At New Dawn, there is no fine print when we say that insurance is accepted. We will verify your benefits for you, and tell you during the pre-admission process exactly what your out-of-pocket expenses will be. We will never charge you more than your copay or deductible for covered services, and we are experts at getting as much treatment authorized as your insurance will allow. Billing your insurance is also something we do on your behalf, so that you can focus on what matters most – your recovery.
Many insurance plans cover up to 100% of our costs. Call us for a confidential insurance verification, and get started on your road to recovery today.
We have a number of affordable treatment options available that are designed to make recovery accessible without causing financial strain. In fact, we have a Treatment Pricing Guarantee that promises to match the cost of any comparable treatment center. Additionally, If you are interested in financing your out-of-pocket expenses, we have partnered with My Treatment Lender to help you access funds for treatment.
