Understanding the Unique Needs of First Responders and Veterans
First responders—including firefighters, police officers, EMTs, and military personnel—are routinely exposed to high-stress situations and traumatic events. This constant exposure can lead to a range of mental health issues, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, depression, and substance use disorders. Traditional treatment programs may not adequately address the specific experiences and needs of this population, necessitating a more tailored approach.
How We Help
New Dawn’s program for first responders is designed to provide a supportive and understanding environment where participants can heal alongside peers with similar experiences. Key features of the program include:
Cohesive Peer Groups
Participants reside and undergo treatment together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and mutual understanding. This unit-based approach helps in building trust and facilitates open discussions about shared experiences.
Experienced Leadership
The program is managed by a master’s level therapist who is also a veteran. This leadership ensures that the program is guided by someone who deeply understands the challenges faced by first responders and can provide empathetic support.
Therapeutic Approaches
The program employs a combination of evidence-based and holistic therapies to address both the psychological and physical aspects of recovery.
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): Helps in identifying and changing negative thought patterns.
- Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): Focuses on building skills to manage emotions and improve relationships.
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): Effective for processing traumatic memories.
- Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Encourages acceptance of thoughts and feelings and commitment to personal values.
- Relapse Prevention & Coping Skills Development: Equips participants with strategies to maintain sobriety.
- Trauma-Informed Equine Therapy: Facilitated by licensed therapists, this therapy uses horse interactions to promote emotional growth.
- Yoga and Meditation: Aid in stress reduction and mindfulness.
- Acupuncture and Massage Therapy: Address physical tension and promote relaxation.
- Art Therapy and Life Coaching: Encourage self-expression and goal setting.
- Nutrition and Fitness Programs: Support overall physical health, which is integral to recovery.
The program incorporates teachings from TJ Woodward's Conscious Recovery and Dr. Stephanie Covington's trauma-informed and gender-responsive programs. These curricula focus on addressing the underlying causes of addiction and promoting holistic healing.
Participants are housed in luxurious, homelike settings with private rooms and ensuite bathrooms. The comfortable environment is conducive to healing and provides a respite from the stresses of daily life.
New Dawn is a VA Community Care Partner and is in-network with TriWest and TriCare insurances, making the program accessible to many veterans and first responders. The center also offers insurance verification services to assist with the admission process.
Recovery is an ongoing journey, and New Dawn provides lifetime aftercare support to its alumni. This includes access to support groups, counseling, and other resources to help maintain sobriety and mental wellness.

Why Are First Responders a Vulnerable Population?
First responders—including police officers, firefighters, paramedics, EMTs, and others—are particularly vulnerable to addiction and mental health issues due to the unique demands and stressors of their roles. Here are the primary reasons why:
First responders regularly witness severe injuries, death, violence, and accidents. Repeated exposure to traumatic incidents can lead to:
- Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)
- Compassion fatigue
- Emotional desensitization or numbing
The urgency and unpredictability of emergencies can cause chronic stress. Prolonged high-alert states strain the body and mind, increasing susceptibility to:
- Anxiety disorders
- Burnout
- Substance use as a coping mechanism
Many first responder professions promote a "tough it out" mentality. This can discourage individuals from seeking help due to:
- Fear of appearing weak
- Concerns about job security or fitness for duty
- Lack of emotional outlets
Shift work, long hours, and interrupted sleep are common. Sleep deprivation contributes to:
- Impaired judgment
- Increased emotional reactivity
- Heightened risk of depression and substance misuse
While this is improving, many departments still underfund or underprioritize behavioral health services, resulting in:
- Undiagnosed or untreated mental health conditions
- Reliance on alcohol, prescription drugs, or illicit substances
It’s not always the "big one" that causes breakdowns—everyday pressures like paperwork, family strain, financial concerns, and workplace politics add up and chip away at resilience over time.

FAQs
How Can I Pay for Treatment?
Many alcohol and drug rehab centers will advertise that “insurance is accepted”, but if you look at the fine print on their website, they will usually disclose that YOU are responsible for billing your insurance company. This means that they are actually NOT a preferred provider with your health plan, and that you will have to pay the FULL cost of treatment at admission. That is a big risk to take with tens of thousands of dollars, and a heavy burden to carry while in early recovery.
At New Dawn, there is no fine print when we say that insurance is accepted. We will verify your benefits for you, and tell you during the pre-admission process exactly what your out-of-pocket expenses will be. We will never charge you more than your copay or deductible for covered services, and we are experts at getting as much treatment authorized as your insurance will allow. Billing your insurance is also something we do on your behalf, so that you can focus on what matters most – your recovery.
Many insurance plans cover up to 100% of our costs. Call us for a confidential insurance verification, and get started on your road to recovery today.
We have a number of affordable treatment options available that are designed to make recovery accessible without causing financial strain. In fact, we have a Treatment Pricing Guarantee that promises to match the cost of any comparable treatment center. We also offer special discounts to Veterans, First Responders, former Union workers and their family members, as well as to our Alumni.
Additionally, If you are interested in financing your out-of-pocket expenses, we have partnered with My Treatment Lender to help you access funds for treatment. They offer flexible financing options, low monthly payments and competitive interest rates for part or all of your drug and alcohol treatment costs. Call us today, we can help you get the life back that you deserve.
If you do not have insurance or prefer to pay cash out of pocket, please reach out for a confidential call to discuss treatment options as well as cost.
