In the brain, memories, thoughts, feelings, and movements are all processed by cells called neurons. Neurons are organized into circuits and networks that send, receive, and process signals throughout the nervous system. To send a signal, neurons release neurotransmitters that communicate with other cells throughout the nervous system.
The use of substances interferes with the way that neurons communicate through neurotransmitters by over-activating the brain’s “reward circuit”. This area of the brain is responsible for motivation, the pleasurable effects of healthy activities, and the formation of habits and routines. When this part of the brain has been repeatedly overactivated by a substance, the circuit adapts to it, and it becomes hard to feel anything without the substance.
The use of substances is tied to underlying trauma, mental health and other complex brain functions. The coping mechanism of using substances rewires these neurons. In treatment we work to unravel and reroute these pathways using proven therapeutic modalities like, CBT, ART, DBT and other therapies in a customized treatment plan.

We provide our clients with effective treatment through traditional therapies such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT), Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART) for trauma, and motivational interviewing. Evidence shows that these therapies have the most positive effect on a client’s motivation during treatment and on continued motivation well after treatment.
Holistic and experiential therapies are provided to clients as extracurricular activities during their treatment program. These therapies include equine therapy, yoga, acupuncture, and expressive arts. A healthy combination of evidence-based and experiential therapies has proven extremely effective in healing the mind, body, and spirit.

- All residences at our luxury treatment facilities are made to feel more like a home than a hospital. In every residential home, our client will find spacious meeting rooms, individual bedrooms with en suite bathrooms, wall-mounted televisions, a large kitchen, and a washer and dryer.
- A 6-client limit in our gender-specific housing
- We limit our capacity to 6 clients at a time so we can focus our full attention on each client’s individual recovery. All facilities have a clinician-to-client ratio of 1:3, ensuring that our clients have the on-site care they deserve.
- Our facilities are gender-specific to focus on experiences, expectations, and trauma that are often seen differently by men and women. Gender-specific programs decrease distractions and encourage a sense of community among like-minded peers.
- Holistic support
- Holistic therapies are used in addition to traditional therapy to nurture healing for the mind, body, and spirit. These holistic approaches include outdoor recreation and hobbies for physical well-being, art and music therapy for mental well-being, and yoga and acupuncture for spiritual well-being.
- Experiential therapies
- New Dawn’s experiential therapies allow clients to enjoy fun, new activities alongside traditional therapies. These experiences include equine and alpaca-assisted therapies that encourage self-awareness, patience, and empathy. We also encourage physical activities such as hiking, walks, and going to the gym.
